Does any religion mention this?
It has come to my mind recently that living life in hopes for a bright future constantly is too fragile. Any mistake or event done in the present can shatter that imagination instantly. This causes depression and lack of motivation to do anything. Living in despair because you believe your future will be a horrible experience is also incorrect.
Also the past - yes, many of us have horrible experiences that they have a hard time forgetting, or forgiving. But note that they are gone. They can never happen anymore. Heck, YOU can make them never happen anymore. But not by hoping. Not by praying... praying is for things you cannot affect 100%.. which are mainly other people.
You can only affect yourself. Truly, there are situation where it's "too late" but they can be prevented by acting in the present. You cannot enjoy life dreaming and then be in massive despair because your dreams can't come true. Rather stay on the ground and do things so your life will be as good as possible. It may not be exactly that dream, but hey, it could be remotely close, it could be better, it may not reach the level but still will be satisfying because you did everything you could!
Pretty much Makise Kurisu said words similar to that... it's a really great life philosophy.Sure, it may not make life super-smooth and you may still mope about your mistakes, but hey! You could change the present again to make something nice happen...
